    THE AUDIENCE IS THRILLED, Designblok 2024

    The art project “THE AUDIENCE IS THRILLED” presents a nostalgic reflection and critique of childhood dreams.

    As part of the upcoming Designblok 2024 exhibition, two talented artists, MgA Nonna Lorenz (@nonna.post) and MgA Daria Borshch (@www.idolly.art), have joined forces to create a captivating project that explores the transformation of childhood dreams and ideals in contrast to the reality of adulthood.

    Why the circus?

    Both artists address the theme of the circus in their works, but each in her own way.

    Nonna Lorenz, in her porcelain art, focuses on the circus, which once represented a joyful place full of excitement, but has since, in her eyes, transformed into a symbol of disillusionment. Her figurines capture circus motifs that evoke nostalgia while also critiquing the modern world. For Nonna, the circus now stirs negative emotions, revealing the darker sides of what was once a magical spectacle.

    In contrast, Daria Borshch finds refuge in the circus through her paintings. For her, it symbolizes dreams, magic, and an escape from the mundane. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a circus gymnast, but after leaving that path, she now returns to the circus as a place of adventure and wonder.

    Her paintings portray the circus as a safe space where inspiration and peace can be found, contrasting sharply with Nonna’s more critical view.

    This project combines two distinct interpretations of the circus, resulting in a profound reflection on the loss of illusions, personal dreams, and the reality of adult life.

    After ten years of working with porcelain, Nonna Lorenz, under the pseudonym nonna post, has realized that her unique style stems from her childhood, where she preserved her pure innocence. She works closely with her inner child, unafraid of primitive and naïve forms, visual contrasts, and sometimes critical themes infused with humor and satire. Last year, in her “Parasit” collection, nonna post opened up the theme of porcelain makers. This year, the designer and artist is preparing a new show exclusively for Designblok, which is sure to leave the audience thrilled.

    Daria views art as a deeply personal act. An artist must experience what they paint to infuse their work with their own energy. Every viewer, even without reading the description of her paintings, feels a unique connection to them. Her art provides a fresh perspective on the world around us. In recent times, with wars and unsettling events shaking the world, prices rising, and job searches becoming increasingly difficult, the artist finds her inner peace through art. Her paintings offer a window into alternate realities, places where one can escape from their worries and find solace.

    This vivid painting reimagines the Simpson family with a Matrix-inspired twist, using blue to represent those content within their reality and pink for those seeking to escape it, inviting viewers to ponder their own perceptions of truth and illusion.

    That’s an intriguing interpretation! In this context, the use of blue and pink takes on a metaphorical dimension, drawing a parallel with themes from “The Matrix” movie series, where blue represents acceptance of the constructed reality (staying in the Matrix) and pink symbolizes the desire to break free and explore the true nature of existence (exiting the Matrix). 

    In the painting, the figures in blue, who appear to be the majority, could be seen as those who are content with the status quo or perhaps unaware of the larger truths outside their current reality. Meanwhile, the pink figure, seemingly in the minority, might represent an individual’s yearning for change and awakening.

    Such an interpretation adds a layer of depth to the artwork, encouraging viewers to reflect on the nature of reality and personal awakenings, much like the thematic explorations in “The Matrix.” It’s a thought-provoking way to view the painting, offering a narrative that aligns with philosophical questions about perception, reality, and freedom.

    The concept of a “rabbit hole” originates from Lewis Carroll’s classic novel, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” where the protagonist, Alice, follows a rabbit into its burrow and falls into a long, deep hole that leads her to a fantastical, surreal world. Since then, the term “rabbit hole” has transcended its literal meaning to become a powerful metaphor in various contexts. Here are some of the common symbolic interpretations of a rabbit hole:

    1. Curiosity and Exploration: The rabbit hole represents the irresistible allure of the unknown and the human instinct to explore new territories or ideas. It symbolizes the journey that begins with a simple curiosity and leads to unexpected and complex scenarios.
    2. Entering the Subconscious: In psychological terms, falling down a rabbit hole can symbolize delving deep into the subconscious mind, exploring hidden thoughts and emotions that influence one’s behavior and perceptions.
    3. Escape from Reality: The rabbit hole can also represent an escape mechanism, a portal to a world that defies the ordinary rules of reality. It offers an alternative existence far removed from mundane or harsh realities.

  • Grotesque as a mirror of reality

    Grotesque as a mirror of reality

    Grotesque is an artistic technique based on exaggeration, the combination of unexpected and sharp contrasts, and the grotesque aspect of my works is that the smells around us penetrate the real visible world and absorb us with contrast and mixing of colours.

    Rémi Astruc argues that although there is a huge variety of motifs and characters, the three main tropes of the grotesque are twofold, hybridity and metamorphosis. Beyond the contemporary understanding of the grotesque as an aesthetic category, he showed how the grotesque functions as a fundamental existential experience. Moreover, Astruc identifies the grotesque as a fundamental and potentially universal anthropological device that societies use to conceptualize alterity and change.

    They are almost fantastic images, images where something real, like a person, is depicted in different colors and gender neutral, and unreal, like these smells, colors outside the spectrum, what we cannot see.

    I started to paint smell, in my intermediate work in the second year of my MA, where I experiment with the depicted form, paying attention to the smells that surround me and that are close to me and evoke certain feelings and emotions. My work visually reflects the sensations caused by the studied smell, color, texture, shape, interaction of the combination and the components of the fragrance. I must have painted the scent moments before the pandemic, the main symptom of which is to get rid of this feeling, who could imagine that it looks quite comical now.

    In this work I show the world around us with an open mind, as it was before, as it is, and as it will be, as it always has been. Samsara spins and life itself remains unchanged, even as people, situations and environments change. The chosen theme aims to reflect reality, so in my paintings I want to show an ordinary life, even a peaceful one, which for me has hardly changed at all, because we create life around us. Except that in some months the smells diminished when everything was interrupted by the sterility and the vacuum in which the city was immersed, when we took off and put on the veil and each time performed the ritual of purification with the sacred disinfectant.

    The images capture hikes into the countryside, time at home, time on the street near a dirt road. Sometimes the smell is less because I have to wear a veil in traffic, shopping malls and other public places, sometimes the pleasant smells are more, sometimes the smells are unpleasant and there are too many. Each picture will have a few scenes with our lives, with a certain season, I am inspired by the works of Rittstein or the Wimmelbuch book. And also works by Kaws, Kandinsky, Franz Mark, Paul Klee, and the Schmidt group.

    So I’m showing my vision for 2020-2021, specifically COVID-19. The main character in all the paintings was in the form of my son, and the background color fields are synesthesia of smells, so I see certain smells around me in different seasons.

    Inspiration

    The beginning of that semester was very promising, I wanted to continue the topic of Fragrances and exploring different scents through the painting. But it turned out that not everything is as simple as it did when we started quarantine. And then everything broke, there was no interest or desire to create, because we began to isolate ourselves from everything and everyone in our residence between the four walls, at first we heard that you can not go out if not needed, you can not go for walks, you can only go out when you need solve something important.

    Time seemed to stop, but more and more I saw articles and videos of how Easter was talked about. How do people worry about celebrating themselves, if at all? I’m worried, what if all the shops are closed at once? What we even think about.
    Can we remember what precedes Easter? Christmas? Yes, of course, but the month just before Easter is fasting, during which people who practice their faith or support traditions do not eat all the products of animal origin. Is Easter coming and is it all over? Do we wait months of fasting to eat meat again later? Without thinking about what the human body has now endured and what it is showing us. What’s the point of all this? Happy images of rabbits and hens on Easter packages began to touch me deeply. And as if no one was embarrassed that we would immediately find them dead on the shelves and then on our friends’ plates. Were these animals happy at all? Is the holy festival so clean? Or is it the victim again? But does Jesus say he is the last sacrifice?

    That’s why I created an altar that only opens at Easter and shows our essence. The closed altar is a child and a wolf, they are clean, have no bad thoughts and are in paradise gardens. When we open the altar, we see on the outside that other animals are added to the wolf and man, which we forget in everyday life, we use, but we are not friends. However, we cannot divide animals into edible / inedible. All are white to represent life.

    When we open the altar, we see a figure sitting at a table, this is the last supper. Only one man celebrates Easter in isolation and shows everyone the dishes on the table, a set of knives and one book in his large closet. On the table plates of meat prepared on the fire. The flesh is black to indicate death. The golden frame sends us to the icons, which shows us that it is a sacred phenomenon and a picture of a mountain that will never change.

    I chose wood because I wanted to achieve authenticity and to make this altar double-sided. I chose a beech tree in the form of prepared glued boards. Black acrylic varnish was applied as a base. There were also minor problems when painting the image, when the acrylic was applied on one side, the boards began to bend, after applying the acrylic image from the other side, the problem was settled.

    Topic
    Intervention – external intervention in a process. The aim of my term paper was to explore the feelings associated with the birth of a child, the emergence of responsibility, planning, expectations, fears, contact with reality, and the reactions of other people around me.
    Inspiration
    Was I inspired by the work of the Impressionist? For me, impressionism – an impression, an impression of the past, an attempt to capture the immediate atmosphere of a given moment, unrepeatable moments, a moment of mental mood. As a result of self-reflection on the given topics – emphasizing that the past cannot be returned, and we have a responsibility for ourselves and our ability to influence how the future turns out.

    The image has two in focus, the background with the breastfeeding woman, and the baby in the foreground, in a realistic style, as a symbol that the mother and the environment will not be able to influence the baby to the extent that the baby itself can affect its surroundings and even the mother. The child as a symbol of the new life that we as parents experience together with the child.
    The figures in the picture shown in black and white, as well as a person from birth, we see everything without color. For a child of black and white, shades of gray are the first colors that everyone notices. Other colors that are in the picture are colors that are all around the baby from birth, although it is not yet noticeable and does not distinguish. Blue skies as well as dressed children are a symbol of hope for a bright future. Yellow symbolizes the radiation of the sun, joy, fields of wheat, and the life energy that is all around.
    Comparison and influence on art
    Unlike the Impressionists, who used their technique to paint a plenaire as a quick painting, I, on the other hand, tried to capture a plot that had lasted for two months. For art, this brings a combination of style while capturing an unstable moment.
    It is also an interference in the political debate regarding the citizenship of the child, an unstable or insecure situation in Ukraine, and the fact that our son is basically 75% Ukrainian, while he has Russian citizenship, even though he was born as Plzeňak, he will probably grow up here. and he will rather feel like a Czech.
    To remember where the child comes from, the whole picture looks like the Ukrainian flag symbolizing free will.
