The Little Knight – limited prints

The Little Knight is a window into my son’s world — and into an age-old question of what it means to grow up as a boy, a future man, a protector.

In this painting, he stands barefoot yet armored, in the middle of his room — his kingdom. Around him: toys frozen like loyal guards, plush animals and pixel swords, cartoon heroes and globes mapping out the dreams that wait beyond these four walls. He has no face here, because this child could be anyone’s child — yours, mine, ours — carrying the same timeless wish: to stand strong when the world feels too big, too dark, too uncertain.

Children pose so still in their little fortresses, surrounded by the soft clutter of their treasures — blocks, maps, stuffed toys — each an artifact of innocence and imagination. Yet in his hand is a sword, not steel but pixelated, a toy born from a game. A bridge between the ancient image of the knight and the modern boy who plays warrior behind bedroom doors.

Why does he feel the need to defend? Perhaps every child senses, even if wordless, that the world beyond the room is not always safe — and that one day they will need to protect what they love. This painting holds that quiet moment: the dream of courage standing guard over a pile of soft toys, comic books, and a mother’s hope that he can grow up strong but gentle, brave but kind.
