The Little Knight is a window into my son\u2019s world \u2014 and into an age-old question of what it means to grow up as a boy, a future man, a protector.<\/p>\n
In this painting, he stands barefoot yet armored, in the middle of his room \u2014 his kingdom. Around him: toys frozen like loyal guards, plush animals and pixel swords, cartoon heroes and globes mapping out the dreams that wait beyond these four walls. He has no face here, because this child could be anyone\u2019s child \u2014 yours, mine, ours \u2014 carrying the same timeless wish: to stand strong when the world feels too big, too dark, too uncertain.<\/p>\n
Children pose so still in their little fortresses, surrounded by the soft clutter of their treasures \u2014 blocks, maps, stuffed toys \u2014 each an artifact of innocence and imagination. Yet in his hand is a sword, not steel but pixelated, a toy born from a game. A bridge between the ancient image of the knight and the modern boy who plays warrior behind bedroom doors.<\/p>\n
Why does he feel the need to defend? Perhaps every child senses, even if wordless, that the world beyond the room is not always safe \u2014 and that one day they will need to protect what they love.
